Pepe, director of the WWF programme
My name is José Luis (Pepe) Gerhartz. I am a Geographer with more than 30 years of experience in environmental and conservation planning. As a former natural resource and environment specialist at the Physical Planning Institute of Cuba, I have been involved for years in urban, regional and conservation planning at different scales and territories.
In 1998 I joined the National Centre for Protected Areas of Cuba as GIS expert and conservation planning specialist. Here, among other tasks, I was in charge of the design and development of the National Protected Areas Information System.
I have always been involved in teaching, offering lessons at the Faculties of Geography and Biology of the University of Havana, and I was a guest lecturer at universities in Spain, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. And I provided trainings to protected areas staff in Cuba, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Colombia.
In 2006 I was appointed director of the WWF conservation programme in Cuba and as such I have participated in drafting WWF conservation strategies for Cuba and implemented several WWF projects so far.
Born on a farm and living on an island, I was always in contact with nature. That is why I love wildlife, mountains and oceans equally. I have been a very active cave explorer and speleologist until recently, as well as a hiker and snorkeler. I have two kids, Adrian and Monica, who also love nature. I live happily with my wife and conservation colleague Yanet in a small apartment in Havana where the door is always open to friends, and to friends of friends.

Katherin, volunteer
My name is Katherin and I am studying French at the University of Havana. My big hobby is photography. Since more than three years I have been involved in nature conservation, which is really very important to us all. With WWF I was able to visit some of the protected areas of Cuba and I learned much about the endangered species. I got the chance to collect very interesting pictures.
At the end of June I will join an expedition to Cayos de San Felipe, a group of islands at the south-western part of Cuba. This field work will involve the area management and the protection of sea turtles. I promise I will send you the photos!

Teresita, finance & logistics at the WWF programme
I am Teresita, and I work for the WWF programme in Cuba since three years. I am responsible for the finances and logistics. I am graduated in Economy and have 34 years of experience in this work field. I love the work I do. I adore nature and that’s why I feel privileged to work for WWF.
